I am very aware that there is a lot of present day controversy concerning Columbus Day. To me, it is one of my favorite days. I love that there is a day that celebrates a scientist who was willing to ask what is on the other side. As I study Columbus each year with my kids we celebrate that curiosity and bravery that he showed. He went, he got the "grant" money from the Queen of Spain and he explored.
Our dinner was fish, orange juice (to prevent scurvy) and biscuits as we celebrated the sailors who spent weeks sailing into the unknown. Our cake was flat but the kids have challenged me to make it a globe next year. We will just have to wait and see. It was fun to stand and ask the kids if they wanted a piece of Spain, the new world, the Atlantic Ocean or one of the ships (the Nina, Pinta or the Santa Maria). For the record I was the only one who went for a ship.
